Learn more about Turmeric

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric or Curcuma longa is a member of the ginger family and a common Asian culinary spice made from dried roots and rhizome of the flowering plant. The root has a golden orange colour due to its polyphenolic content which include curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin.

The strength of curcumin in food grade turmeric is between 1 and 7% (1-7 grams per 100g turmeric powder).

These curcuminoids are poorly absorbed within the gut and require either healthy fats or piperine (within black pepper) to cross the cell membrane.

Is Turmeric anti-inflammatory?

The curcuminoids within turmeric have strong anti-inflammatory activity but in order to work they require a clinically effective daily dose of above 700mg total curcuminoids (the weight of turmeric powder is not relevant) alongside a minimum dose of 9mg piperine for absorption.

What are the benefits of Turmeric supplements?

Turmeric curcuminoids at an effective dose have a very wide range of benefits including:

• Reducing joint and muscle aches
• Helping relieve and prevent brain fog
• General headaches
• Improves gut health and reduces gut hypersensitivity
• Great for reducing hot flushes and general menopausal symptoms
• Balances mood
• Helps improve and prevent problems with brain function

Does Turmeric lower blood pressure?

A systematic review of 11 clinical studies demonstrated that turmeric curcuminoids at the effective strength lowers systolic blood pressure.

What is the recommended dosage of Turmeric for inflammation?

A minimum daily dose of 700mg of curcuminoids alongside 9mg of piperine from black pepper for absorption.

Can you take Turmeric with blood pressure tablets?

You can take Turmeric alongside blood pressure tablets but only under the guidance of your GP or pharmacist

You must not take Turmeric supplements with any prescribed blood thinners such as warfarin.

Can Turmeric lower blood pressure?

A systematic review of 11 clinical studies demonstrated that turmeric curcuminoids at the effective strength lowers only systolic blood pressure (no effect on the diastolic pressure).

What are the side effects of Turmeric capsules?

Turmeric capsules are generally well tolerated with very few side effects. Occasionally the turmeric can cause heart burn and, in these cases, simply opening the capsule and mixing with a full fat yoghurt will help avoid this problem.

You must not take Turmeric supplements with any prescribed blood thinners such as warfarin.

What is the most effective joint supplement?

The most effective joint supplement is one that contains a minimum daily dose of 700mg curcuminoids with 9mg piperine from black pepper.

How it works

Our high potency turmeric contains multiple active curcuminoids at 95% effective strength. Compare this to standard food grade turmeric which contains ~4-6% curcuminoids and you can quickly see why we call ours 'high potency'. Clinical evidence has shown curcuminoids can have significant positive effects on soothing aching muscles and joints as well as improving sports performance and recovery.

This is combined with naturally sourced marine magnesium to further support nerve function, whilst the 95% bioactive piperine (another helpful bio-active) supplied by the black pepper helps increase absorption by up to 2000%.

Please note: because our turmeric is high potency we do not advise the use of Natruflex for anyone who is prescribed an antiplatelet or anticoagulant, also known as 'blood thinners'. If you are unsure if you are taking such a prescribed medication or would like further information on this please get in touch with our pharmacists who are available to answer any questions.

How to use
